December 3rd is observed as the World handicapped Day and it is a good time to remember our brethren who were born less privileged.
We must note that the people who were born with disabilities certainly did not want it and that they deserve better attention and treatment from the authorities in particular.
On that day, as a routine gesture, the ministers give many plans to help the handicapped people but nothing will happen out of these. Offers will remain offers till the next handicapped day. There are lots of government jobs (about 1000 in Kerala as per last year's statement) that are reserved for them. After sometime, the government will come out to say that there were no eligible candidates for these posts and hence the list was getting cancelled.
This day is observed by the government by giving many offers before various media, by spending large amounts. But no one really cares to know if the handicapped have any food or medicine made available to them. Some doctors even deny medical facility for these less privileged because they hardly complain. No one thinks that they too are human beings. No one will speak even at the time of election for these people. No court of law even comes to their rescue. They continue to live with their limitations, suffering much, with no options available, till their death.
We as a society needs to be more aware and concerned about our fellow beings who are physically disabled. We need to take care of their needs more fruitfully by enabling them to lead honourable lives. Taking care of the less privileged is equivalent to worshipping the God.If the World Handicapped Day could be a good reminder for this, I shall be happy.
